Freemasonry & Charity
Freemasons are taught to practice charity and to care, not only for their own, but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving, and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.
Venturer Lodge has donated significant amounts of money to Charity since its formation, to both Masonic and non-Masonic Charities alike. It is impossible to calculate the total amount without going back over 55 years of minutes. The main Masonic Charities have been well supported by the Lodge via the Provincial Festivals:- 1974 – £2700, 1985 – £6000, 2000 – £9,800, 2011 – £20,000. Now they have all been amalgamated into the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which Essex is now supporting by Festival 2022. We have already donated in excess of £27,500, and there will be more. We also make regular donations to other Masonic Charities such as Teddies for Loving Care, Duke of Kent Court, Hamilton Court etc. In the past few years, we have also supported the Metropolitan (London) Grand Lodge Appeals for a new London Air Ambulance and the Fire Brigade Appeal.
Over the years we have supported many Non-Masonic Charities as well i.e. Macmillan Cancer Support, Air Ambulance, British Heart Foundation and St Clare Hospice to name but a few. Scouting Charitable giving has included – Agooneree, BP’s Caravan restoration, Scout Groups at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Great Ormond Street and we have given help to many individuals to attend various Jamborees and International Camps.
